Research Work
|
Research Interests
- Ship Design:
Design of ships with specific focus on the integration of the various subsystems
into the ship system and the interactions between the subsystem design and
the overall ship design. Particular interest at the design of advanced hull
forms such as high speed monohulls, Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull
(SWATH) ships, Surface Effect Ships (SES), Air Cushion Vehicles
(ACVs) and surface naval combatants.
- Survivability:
Investigation of the survivability of Ro-Ro passenger
and naval ships through their susceptibility and vulnerability
characteristics.
Analysis of the Radar Cross Section (RCS) and Infrared (IR)
signatures for naval combatants and their suppression through proper
design. Vulnerability assessment of Ro-Ro and naval ships using alternative probabilistic damage stability
procedures. Study the impact of the new rules and regulations on
existing and new designs.
- Design Optimization:
Parametric definition of ship design for investigating and
implementing state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. Application of
Evolutionary and Genetic Algorithms for obtaining the Pareto-optimum
solutions in Multi-Criteria decision problems.
- Evacuation Modeling & Simulation:
Modeling and simulation of the human behaviour and the
crowd dynamics during the evacuation of large passenger ships.
Investigation of the potential applicability of Cellular Automata-based
(CA) programs to the compliance procedure of the relevant IMO
regulations.
- Seakeeping:
Operability analysis using seakeeping computer codes
such as NEWDRIFT (a 3D panel method software developed by Prof.
A. Papanikolaou) for estimating the performance of monohull and
twin-hull ships in sea waves, according to prescribed criteria.
- Computer Aid Design & Animation:
Application of modern computer aid design (i.e. AUTOCAD,
Rhinocheros, NAPA, AUTOSHIP) & animation (i.e. 3DS max) programs in
ship design and simulation. Development of user-friendly computer
programs using low-level application programming interfaces (APIs) such
as Microsoft® Direct3D® and OpenGL.
